Shay Black is part of Ireland’s undisputed “first family of song,” which also includes brothers Michael and Martin and sisters Mary and Frances Black. Best known for their strong singing voices, the Black Brothers draw on a large and varied repertoire, a wide spectrum of Irish songs, from contemporary singer-songwriters to traditional sea chanteys. Shay, a Bay Area resident since 1994, specializes in the sea chanteys as well as more contemporary songs of Northwest England and Scotland. Shay is active in the Irish community in the East Bay area and runs an Irish music and song session at the Starry Plough pub in Berkeley every Sunday night. He is a member of Nauticus, a four piece musical group that performs maritime music in and around the Bay Area. Shay works at Parental Stress Service, a child abuse prevention agency in Oakland and has two daughters, Seosaimhin and Anna. He can be heard on the Black Family albums What a Time (1995), Time for Touching Home (1990), and The Black Family (1986).
The White Horse Harpers, founded and directed by Cheryl Ann Fulton, first saddled up in the spring of 2001. In August 2001 they recorded at Fantasy Studios for the CD Christmas in an Irish Castle. They performed in the California Revels Celtic Show in December 2001. Members of The White Horse Harpers have also performed for Techno Cosmic Masses for The Center for Creation Spirituality in Oakland and for The Festival of Harps.
Recognized worldwide, Cheryl Ann Fulton (The White Horse Harpers) has had an internationally successful performing, recording, teaching and scholarly research career since 1986. She is America’s premier performer of historical harps, and one of the few harpists in the world to play triple harp, medieval harp and contemporary lever harps. Her solo performance for the 2002 World Harp Congress in Geneva affirmed her rank as one of the world’s leading harpists. Known for her exceptional artistry, she has become a renowned and highly sought after teacher of her masterful and expressive technique. Her solo recital performed at the John F. Kennedy Center featured five historical harps on one program of which the Washington Post said, "Fulton drew from all of them a serene and delicate sound.... remarkable instruments which Fulton played with total skill and reverent affection." A versatile recording artist, she can be heard on over thirty albums and soundtracks broadly ranging from early, orchestral, and contemporary music to Celtic music and film scores. A leading scholar in the field of historical harps, Dr. Fulton, a Fulbright scholar and recipient of the Burton E. Adams Prize for Academic Research, is a contributing scholar for the latest edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and A Performers Guide to Medieval Music (IU Press, 2000).
Robin Bellows (The White Horse Harpers) began playing harp when she was 8. She is now a Junior in the Engineering Academy at Oakland Technical High School. After playing the wire-strung harp for several years, she began to study the gut-strung harp with Cheryl Ann Fulton and now enthusiastically plays both. Every summer, she enjoys participating in a teen Celtic music camp as well as traveling and going backpacking. Last summer she was honored to be a Joie Armstrong Scholar with the Yosemite Institute.
Betty Nelson (The White Horse Harpers) has been playing harp for over 10 years. She is a founding member of the medieval harp ensemble Angelorum and has performed and recorded with White Horse Harpers for the Christmas Revels. Most recently, Betty is very much enjoying studying the Welsh triple harp with Cheryl Ann Fulton.
Liza Wallace (The White Horse Harpers) is 12 years old and has been playing the harp since she was 6. She performs with the White Horse Harpers and Bay Area Youth Harp Ensemble. She has given solo performances at graduations, festivals, and other events including former mayor Willie Brown’s birthday party. Along with playing the harp, Liza is also very active in musical theater and has performed in shows such as Annie, Quilters, and Oliver.
