A holiday tradition in the Bay Area for the past twenty years, the Christmas Revels presents a theatrical, participatory celebration of the Winter Solstice that crosses religious and ethnic boundaries, appealing to young and old alike. The Revels blends traditional Elizabethan music, dance, and theater and includes a large volunteer chorus of children and adults drawn from the community along with a number of highly talented professional actors, musicians and artists.
Highlighting a particular culture and period, from a medieval English court to an Appalachian homestead in Kentucky, from a Russian village to the land of the midnight sun, Revels employs traditional materials and seasonal rituals to draw the audience into a magical revelry of song and dance. For the twentieth anniversary production of The Christmas Revels, the group heralds back to the first installment at Mills College in 1986 where the company made merry in the medieval style with the recreation of a 15th century English celebration at Derbyshire's Haddon Hall.
Ensemble Alcatraz will be performing with the troupe again this year alongside vocalists and musicians Susan Rode Morris (soprano), Kit Higginson (recorders and psaltery), Shira Kammen (fiddle), Danny Carnahan (Mandolin, Violin and cello), and Peter Maund (percussion), who will be featured individually and together as the Christmas Revels celebrates this milestone year in its history.
